Before You Begin

Your Prep Kit

Gatorade or similar — 64 oz total, no red or purple color, sugar-free OK for diabetes
Dulcolax (bisacodyl) tablets — exactly 3 tablets, NOT suppository or stool softener form
MiraLAX 238g (8.3 oz) — one full bottle, or generic polyethylene glycol 3350

All items are available without a prescription, usually in the laxative aisle.

Medication Instructions

Blood thinners (Coumadin, Plavix, Xarelto, Pradaxa, Eliquis) — contact your prescribing doctor at least 2 weeks before. Do NOT stop without physician approval.
Diabetes pills — do not take on the day of your procedure
Insulin — discuss dose adjustments with your doctor before procedure day
Aspirin and all other medications — may be taken with a small sip of water on procedure day

IMPORTANT

Do not stop blood thinners on your own — you must get approval from your prescribing physician first.

Common Questions

Q: Can I take my regular medications?

A: Yes — take all medications with a small sip of water unless your doctor told you to hold them. Any medication-specific changes are noted in your prep instructions.

Q: What if I can't finish the prep solution?

A: Call us. We can help with nausea or suggest techniques. Do not skip Dose 2 — an incomplete prep usually means rescheduling.

Q: What if my stool isn't clear after finishing?

A: Call us at (602) 555-0183. We'll help you decide if your procedure can continue as scheduled.

Q: Is it normal to be up all night during prep?

A: Most patients are most active in the 2–3 hours after starting each dose. Most people sleep after the first dose settles.

Preparation Steps

Stop iron supplements

Today • 7:30 AM

Stop all iron-containing products 5 days before your procedure — check multivitamin labels, as many contain iron

Avoid high-fiber foods

Tuesday • 7:30 AM

Avoid these:

Popcorn, nuts, seeds, and raw or cooked vegetables
Beans, lentils, corn, and fresh or dried fruit
Whole-grain and multigrain bread, oatmeal, granola
Fiber supplements (Metamucil, Citrucel, Konsyl)

Clear liquids only today

Thursday • 7:30 AM

You CAN have:

Water, apple juice, or white grape juice
Fat-free broth — black coffee or plain tea, no milk or creamer
Clear sodas or Gatorade — no red or purple color
Plain gelatin or popsicles — no red or purple color

Avoid these:

All solid food
Red or purple drinks, gelatin, or popsicles
Milk, cream, or dairy in coffee or tea
Alcohol

CALL THE CLINIC

Eating solid food today will likely cause your procedure to be canceled.

Mix your MiraLAX solution

Thursday • 7:30 AM

1Pour all 8.3 oz of MiraLAX powder into a 64-oz pitcher
2Add all 64 oz of Gatorade — no red or purple color
3Stir or shake until completely dissolved
4Refrigerate until ready to drink — do not add ice, sugar, or flavorings

WHY THIS MATTERS

Do not mix until today — the day before your colonoscopy.

Take Dulcolax tablets

Thursday • 5:00 PM

1At 5:00 PM, take 3 Dulcolax (bisacodyl) laxative tablets with a full glass of water

Drink first half of prep solution

Thursday • 7:00 PM

1Starting at 7:00 PM, drink one 8-oz glass every 10 minutes
2Continue until you finish the first 32 oz
3After finishing, you may continue clear liquids until midnight

WHY THIS MATTERS

Bowel movements will begin within 1–2 hours of starting.

Nothing by mouth after midnight

Friday • 12:00 AM

Stop all eating and drinking at midnight — except the morning prep solution.

This is required for your sedation. Eating or drinking after midnight — including water, gum, or mints — may cause your procedure to be canceled.

Drink second half of prep solution

Friday • 3:30 AM

1Starting 4 hours before your procedure, drink one 8-oz glass every 10 minutes
2Continue until you finish the remaining 32 oz

WHY THIS MATTERS

Your clinic will confirm the exact start time based on your procedure time.
